LCD Screens
Liquid Crystal Display, more commonly known as LCD Screens have been around for many years as laptop and computer screens, but its only recently that they have become household items for use as TV displays. It’s only recently that the cost of manufacture and purchase has dropped significantly so that LCD screens can be used in the domestic market.
Why would you choose an LCD screen for your home entertainment system?
Besides how cool they look with there ultra thin profile and flat screens, the LCD tv is easier to watch than a traditional Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TV as LCD’s have a much higher contrast which means they perform better under differing ambient light conditions, such as a dark or light room. Sunlight will not wash out the picture and they are not affected by glare from lamplight. They also have a wide viewing angle, usually in the region of 120° , which allows 60° viewing either side of dead centre of the screen.
The other advantage over traditional TV screens is the resolution of the dots on the screen, technically named the Dot Pitch. Because of the way a LCD screen is made the number of dots on the screen which go to make up the image is huge compared to traditional TV, hence there use first in the computer industry as they are capable of displaying large resolution images. Typically an LCD screen will be 1024 x 768 resolution which gives a massive 786,432 dots on the screen. Of course the more dots and the smaller each dot the better the image quality.
Colour is also a major factor in LCD TV’s, with nearly all new screens now being capable of displaying 16.8 million colours.
